I feel like I understand the route selection. Sure we could stay on the bike path and battle to pass every pedestrian as a giant group of riders, but that would seem a bit disrespectful. And riding on the streets - the regular ones that go places that I need to go on a daily basis - demonstrates that the drivers of Eugene are really incredibly friendly and respectful of bike riders that show a little respect for the basic rules of the road. As an educational event the Jamboree gives me confidence that I could take my kids on the streets in my neighborhood to get to the grocery or the post office. I can ride on the path system anytime. Riding as a big group - following the rules - was enlightening. Thanks SRTS. It was good to see some of the great connections on that route too.

With some young friends, I took part in the 'family friendly' Blackberry ride around Eugene at the weekend and was disappointed in the route choice. Putting families on streets like Blair, to cross 6th, 7th, 11th,, and on across Willamette etc to connect the south bank bike path with Amazon was a very poor choice.
I'm a rider who's comfortable on the road - I did the 63 mile Coburg-Brownsville loop yesterday - but that urban 'family friendly' ride was badly miscategorized.

At the finish, I asked a City of Eugene employee about the choice of route and was told the organizers didn't want to 'clog up' the bike paths. This seems to me inane. The bike paths are there for bike riders, as well as others.
Future family-oriented rides could easily use the north and south river paths, and link to Amazon through the UO campus.

Just keep the riders off Eugene's busiest roads.
